Silicon dioxide in the form of refined silica and other materials is purified up to 98-99% pure silicon. Chemical processing is then performed to reduce the impurities level even further. The purity levels of silicon for semiconductor applications are normally 99.999999999% or higher (commonly known as eleven nines, 11N), and for solar, 99.99999% or higher (7N).
